An autobody workman was on early Saturday morning shot and robbed a short distance from a wake he was attending at Annandale, East Coast Demerara, police said.
The victim has not been named, but the Guyana Police Force said he is an autobody workman who lives at Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara.
He told police two men rode up on a motorcycle and robbed him of a Samsung S9 cellular phone valued at GY$40,000, along with a haversack valued at GY$5,000.
The robbery occurred at about 12:05 on Saturday morning.
Investigators were told that several people, including the victim, were attending the wake of the late Eagon Williams in Annadale.
According to the victim, he left the gathering and while urinating a short distance away, he observed that the two perpetrators were approaching him from an eastern direction.
He said as a result, he turned and ran in the direction towards the ‘wake house’, but the perpetrators caught up with him, held him at gunpoint, and demanded money.
He resisted them, and the suspect with the firearm shot him once in his right thigh, which caused him to fall to the ground.
Police said the victim was subsequently picked up by residents attending the wake and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was admitted and was due to undergo surgery.
