Hours after Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed’s disclosure of damning surveillance video that he says contradicts the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) official account concerning the shooting of his vehicle, a police constable has been arrested for unauthorised disclosure of the video recording and accepting an GY$800,000 bribe.
The 20-year-old police constable, who is stationed at the force’s command centre, is under close arrest because he is suspected of unlawfully disclosing surveillance footage in exchange for money.
Police said preliminary investigations revealed that surveillance footage relating to a shooting incident outside the residence and environs of a senior police officer was allegedly downloaded without authorisation last Friday, and subsequently transferred to an external storage device.
Investigators are examining allegations that the footage was provided to Mr Mohamed in exchange for GY$800,000 on Saturday, the force said.
“The Guyana Police Force remains committed to maintaining accountability and addressing allegations of misconduct within its ranks,” police said.
Earlier Monday, Mr Mohamed played a 23-minute video and again levelled claims of an alleged “failed assassination attempt of the Leader of the Opposition” on October 12.
Questioning why the government did not want to release the video recording of what transpired on Sandy Babb Street and Vlissengen Road, he boasted that members of the GPF’s intelligence arm, known as Special Branch, for providing him with the recording.
“Even the people in Special Branch, they are not pleased with how things are going,” he said.
Mr Mohamed and two of his staff members have since been placed on GY$750,000 bail in connection with the joint charge of gun and ammunition possession and attempting to pervert the course of justice by discharging a firearm at or in the vicinity of the Barr Street, Kitty, Georgetown residence of the Special Branch head, Prem Narine, who is testifying in Mr Mohamed’s extradition proceedings.
