Female pensioner knifes GPL disconnection crew member, policewoman

Last Updated on Saturday, 11 October 2025, 14:15 by Writer

Two grandparents and their 18-month-old granddaughter were injured during a knife attack by their neighbour at Coverden, East Bank Demerara.

The alleged assailant, construction worker 68-year-old Alfred Aaron, has since been arrested in connection with the incident that occurred on Friday at 3:30 p.m. while they were in traffic on the East Bank Road.

The injured adults are housewife 53-year-old Indira Thomas, and her businessman husband, 68-year-old William Thomas.

Mrs. Thomas told police that she and her husband went to a daycare and playgroup located at Friendship, East Bank Demerara, to pick up their granddaughter, and while returning home, they were stuck in the traffic at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, when Mr Aaron started to abuse her using a series of expletives. The two do not speak with each other due to a prior disagreement, she told investigators.

Police said Mr Aaron allegedly also threatened to kill Mr Thomas who stepped out of his vehicle and approached the suspect, trying to assess the situation.

“The suspect then armed himself with a knife and attacked the businessman, causing him to receive injuries to his abdomen and ear. The 18-month-old child received injuries on her left wrist,” police said in a statement.

Mrs Thomas, who tried to part the fight, received injuries on her elbow, hand palm, and cuts on three fingers on her right hand, police said.

Police said the businessman managed to enter his motor car and head to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where they were all seen and examined by a doctor, treated, and sent away.

Investigations in progress.
