The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) on Thursday announced that it has expanded its country-wide metering programme.
Commencing September 6, 2013 the utility will install 3000 water service meters, including service connection upgrades in Gay Park, Fort Canje and New Amsterdam, East Berbice. In addition, customers from Johns Village to Port Mourant, East Berbice Corentyne will benefit from the installation of 2000 meters and service upgrades.
These activities form part of the company’s overall metering programme, which according to Chief Executive Shaik Baksh is pivotal to reducing the Company’s energy consumption. ‘Low consumption by our customers will result in savings for GWI’s energy costs,’ stated the Chief Executive, ‘utilizing less water will also assist our customers in paying less for the service. Research has shown that persons utilizing water for domestic purposes are conscious of their consumption patterns when a meter is installed; they use only what is necessary thereby contributing to the energy conservation drive.’
The Chief Executive further stated that GWI, through its Energy Manager, is implementing strategic initiatives to reduce energy usage throughout its operations. He emphasized however that conservation by customers is vital to reducing the amount of electricity utilized to distribute water. “We are appealing to all customers in receipt of new water meters to monitor their consumption so that their bills will reflect small charges,” stated the Chief Executive, “water meters function well as conservation devices, however, if customers do not monitor their consumption and reduce wastage their water service charges will reflect high usage patterns.”
In addition to the installation of meters, Berbice customers will also benefit from the upgrading of water service connections which will improve the overall level of service. A localized Public Awareness Campaign will also be conducted by the utility to educate customers on the benefits of water service meters; this will include advisories and outreach initiatives in areas in which meter installations are currently being executed.
