Mazaruni prisoner escapes

A convict escaped from the Mazaruni Prison and was up to late Friday afternoon still at large, police said.

The escapee has been identified as Steve Benjamin. He is fair in complexion and about 5 feet, 5 inches tall.

Source said the man of Amerindian descent had been an inmate for just over one year. He was sentenced to four years imprisonment for unlawful wounding.

Sources said he escaped while labouring in the prison compound.
