Thousands of teaching vacancies exist

Teaching Service Commission

There are 2,800 vacancies for senior teachers in the public school system, but the number of vacancies for junior teachers is yet to be decided by the Ministry of Education, Minister of Governance Gail Teixeira said Monday.

She told the National Assembly’s Committee of Supply during consideration of allocations for the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) in the 2026 National Budget that the list of vacancies for senior teachers was first published in the Stabroek News and the Guyana Chronicle on February 1 and would continue to be advertised.

Questioned by the We Invest in Nationhood’s (WIN) Tabita Sarabo-Halley about the number junior vacancies, Ms Teixeira said those would have to be decided by the Ministry of Education taking into consideration the opening of new primary and secondary schools after which the TSC would be informed.

“It’s a synergy between the two organisations to make sure they have balance of supply and demand,” she said.

She said a lot of teachers were also being trained and would like to be employed.

Meanwhile, the Governance Minister, in response to a question by A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU) Ganesh Mahipaul, said more than GY$11 million has been set aside in the 2026 national budget for interior rehabilitation of the “deplorable” TSC office on Brickdam.

She said the boardroom on the third floor would be reconfigured, store rooms renovated and the second floor repainted.

GY$15.4 million was spent for the rehabilitation of the TSC building last year.
