The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) on Wednesday approved a request for a recount of votes cast on the East Coast Demerara (sub-district four) of District Four (Demerara-Mahaica), a GECOM spokeswoman said.
The recount is expected to begin from 8 am Thursday at the Region Four Returning Office on Barrack and Fort streets, Kingston, Georgetown. The six contesting parties have been asked to each provide one accredited agent for each of the 25 tables.
Demerara Waves Online News was reliably informed that the recount would be “non-stop”.
The A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Chief Scrutineer Carol Smith-Joseph told Demerara Waves Online News briefly that all six of the contesting parties requested a recount for that sub-district.
The request for a recount followed the declaration of results for Region Four, Guyana’s most densely populated region.
That declaration shows that the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) for the first time ever won a majority in Region Four with 87,536 votes, followed by APNU with 46,956 and We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) with 41,607.
The Forward Guyana Movement picked up 2,431, Alliance For Change (AFC) 1,765 and Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity 497.
GECOM’s declaration states that 182,209 persons voted in Monday’s general election in Region Four.
In the 2020 general elections for Region Four, the PPPC won 80,920 votes; APNU+Alliance For Change coalition 116,941 out of a total of 203,742 votes that were cast then.
Meanwhile, leader of We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Azruddin Mohamed told Demerara Waves Online News that his party was preparing to dispatch a formal request to GECOM for a total recount of ballots cast in all of District Four.
Highlighting that the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) has always won Region Four, Mr Mohamed said that based on WIN’s trouncing of the PNCR-led APNU in Linden, he was convinced of a similarly good performance in Region Four. “I should have gotten far more votes then,” he said.
Mr Mohamed also alleged that “a lot of my polling agents” were refused entry to polling stations and so he was unable to collect all of the statements of poll. He also said his polling agents were offered bribes such as house lots and money to stay away from the polling stations.
WIN had already requested a recount for Region 8 (Potaro-Siparuni) but GECOM said the request was rejected because it was submitted by the wrong person. WIN said it was seeking legal advice on that decision.
