GECOM green lights six parties to contest elections

Last Updated on Wednesday, 3 September 2025, 23:23 by Writer

The People’s National Congress Reform-led A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) suffered major electoral losses to the almost three-month old We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), and while the incumbent People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) appeared to have mostly retained its support compared t0 2020, it failed to convince a majority of voters in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice), based on so far available authenticated district declarations.

Focussing on the general election that determines the presidency and number of parliamentarians for each party, in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), a traditional PPPC stronghold, that party won 17,478 votes followed by WIN, 7,400; APNU, 1,835, and Alliance For Change (AFC), 191.

The total number of persons who appeared to have voted then were 27,217. That contrasts with 18,785 for the PPPC and 7,340 for APNU+AFC coalition in the 2020 elections when 26,872 persons appeared to have voted.

In Region Three (Essequibo Islands/ West Demerara), another PPPC stronghold, that party won 48,055 on Monday, WIN 12,969, APNU 8,992 and AFC 322 out of a total of 71,561 who appeared to have voted. In 2020, the PPPC won 47,851 and APNU+AFC 23,808 out of a total of 73,077 votes cast then.

Last Monday, the PPPC won 41,320 in its historical stronghold of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) , APNU 6,223, WIN 12,623 and AFC 315. Those who appeared to have voted totalled 61,624 persons. The PPP had hoped to win 55,000 votes in this year’s elections. In the 2020 elections in Region Six, of the 65,079 who voted then, the PPP had won 43,440 and APNU+AFC 20,399

Across in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) in the 2025 general elections; 2,872 persons voted for the PPPC, 2,562 for WIN, APNU 276 and AFC 57 out of a total of 5,870 persons who appeared to have voted.

In 2020, of the 4,778 persons who appeared to have voted in Region 8, 2,052 voted for the PPPC and 2,152 for APNU+AFC.

Looking at Region Nine (Upper Takatu-Upper Essequibo), that district declaration shows that the PPPC won 9,938 votes last Monday, WIN 4,817 , APNU 450 and AFC 192. This year, 15,548 persons appeared to have voted.

This year’s election results also mark a major upset for APNU and AFC when compared to their showing of 4,887 as a coalition in 2020. The PPP gained slightly this year in Region Nine over its 2020 figure of 7,070. In that year, 12,457 voted.

Based on the latest available district declarations, the biggest upset so far for APNU was Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice), which includes the hometown of APNU leader Aubrey Norton. In that region, his party won 5,334 votes in this year’s election compared to 19,169 in 2020 in coalition with AFC.

Mr Norton partly attributed that shift to the PPPC’s impoverishment of Region 10. WIN, led by wealthy businessman Azruddin Mohamed, won 10,458 votes in Region 10, while AFC picked up 210 and the PPP, 4,260.

Though the PPPC boasted of awarding numerous small contracts to many mainly Afro-Guyanese contractors in Region 10, several campaign activities in that region and the defection of PNCR member Jermaine Figueira to the PPPC, the incumbent did not register a big gain over its 2020 election showing of 3,162. The PPPC had hoped to win Region 10 from the PNCR-APNU for the first time.

GECOM’s District Four declaration for the country’s most densely populated region is yet to become available.
