Declaration of results by electoral districts began trickling in up to Tuesday night ahead of Thursday’s intended official declaration of Guyana’s general and regional elections.
Those already declared by the returning officers are Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), Region 8 (Potaro-Siparuni) and Region 9 (Upper Takatu- Upper Essequibo).
The declarations show the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) and the just over three-month old We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) carting off most votes so far. The densely populated districts such as Regions 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 were yet to be declared by the returning officers there.
Figures obtained so far show that
Region 2 – General
APNU – 1,835
AFC – 91
FGM – 147
PPPC – 17,478
WIN – 7,400
Region 8 – General
APNU – 276
AFC – 56
PPPC – 2,872
WIN – 2,562
Valid votes: 5,767
Total appeared to have voted 5,780
Region 9 (General)
APNU – 450
AFC – 192
PPPC – 9,938
WIN – 4,817
Valid votes – 15,397
Total appeared to have voted 15,548
Overall, the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) is claiming victory for both the presidency and control of the 65-seat National Assembly.
A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) presidential candidate Aubrey Norton is on record as saying that he believed that his party was on a path to victory, along with a good showing in Region 6 (East Berbice-Corentyne) but that optimism could wane if the figures change from their current trend.
Procedurally, all district declarations have to be sent to the Chief Election Officer who would then compile a report and dispatch it to the seven-member commission. The GECOM Chairman then issues a declaration of the results.
APNU has raised concerns about the number of Indian nationals and Bangladeshis-Commonwealth citizens who voted in the general and regional elections. However, GECOM said they were constitutionally entitled to be registered once they were residing in Guyana for at least one year.
