A suspected bandit was arrested moments after he and another man had allegedly robbed a man who was walking at Festival City, South Ruimveldt, police said.
“Ranks of a police patrol in the area responded to the sound of the gunshots and arrested the man who had the firearm. His accomplice managed to escape with a gold chain from the victim,” police said.
The incident occurred about 10:30 Tuesday morning when two men confronted 34-year old Marcel Fitzalbert and demanded the jewellery he was wearing.
A police spokesman said Fitzalbert put up a resistance and a scuffle ensued between himself and the armed man, during which rounds were discharged. No one was injured.
An unlicensed 9mm. pistol with five rounds was recovered. The suspect is in police custody and charges will be made shortly, police said.
