Office Assistant convicted for marijuana possession for medicinal use

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 20:59 by GxMedia

A member of the local Rastafarian community was Thursday heard lobbying President Donald Ramotar for the decriminalization of marijuana for religious use.
An office assistant at a service station was Friday fined GUY$3,000 and ordered to perform community service after he pleaded guilty to being in possession of marijuana.

Quincy Spellen of Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown told Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that he had four grammes of marijuana in his possession on March 12 for medicinal purposes. He explained that he was advised to use the herb to make tea for an illness.

Spellen said hew works at a Shell Gas Station but he did not say which branch.

Earlier this month, Caricom leaders in St. Vincent and the Grenadines agreed to set up a commission to advise them on the pros and cons of legalizing marijuana for trade, recreational and medicinal use.

The Rastafarian community has been lobbying individual governments and Caricom as a collective to legalize the possession of marijuana for recreational use.
