The drivers licence portal is now online on the Guyana Digital School, and already authorities say steps have been taken to ensure that students cannot cheat the system.
Minister of Education Sonia Parag said the school now handles exclusively the theoretical training and examination towards obtaining drivers licences. “There is no other place that you will be able to write your Guyana your national driver’s license exam than the Guyana Digital School. So, if any other agency tells you that you can write iit with them, that’s not legitimate. That is no longer legitimate. It is fully transitioned to the Guyana Digital School,” she said.
Director of the Guyana Digital School, Phillipe Walker said while the aim is to.make the process easier for the public, credibility, accountability, and transparency safeguards have been included.
“Convenience must be supported by safeguards that allow the public and/or partner agencies to trust the result,” he said. Mr Walker said Artificial Intelligence would be used to register and verify students through facial recognition.
Other partner agencies are the Guyana Police Force, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Education.
Minister of Government Efficiency Zulfikar Ally said the marking system, aided by Artificial Intelligence, would be transparent. He also encouraged attendees, the majority of whom were secondary school students, not to buy licences but instead follow the entire process from studying and taking theoretical and practical examinations.
“We shouldn’t be proud to say we’re going to buy a driver’s license,” Mr Ally said.
Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond said the driver’s license portal provides a fully online examination platform for persons seeking to obtain their driver’s license. She also said the new system would eliminate corruptly obtaining driver’s licences. “As we launch this portal, let us remember that the goal is not simply to make it easier to sit a driver’s examination. It is to strengthen the integrity of the process through which we determine who is qualified to drive on our roads,” she said.
Traffic Chief, Assistant Police Commissioner Mahendra Singh said the new portal through the Guyana Digital School marked a major shift from in-person lectures and examinations to computer-based examinations at the Zara computer centers countrywide. He said this new system would “introduce our young people to the principles of road safety, traffic laws, and responsible road use at an earlier stage.” “By integrating the size into the education system, we are not simply preparing individuals to obtain a driver’s license. We are helping to develop a generation of more informed, disciplined, and responsible road users,” he also said.
