GTT wants increased landline rates before liberalisation

Last Updated on Tuesday, 25 April 2017, 12:50 by Denis Chabrol

The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) on Tuesday appealed to customers to be patient with Internet “outages” they may experience as the company takes high-tech steps to ensure a faster and reliable service by the third quarter of this year.

The telecoms provider said the upgrade, being undertaken in partnership with General Datatech (GDT), is expected to be completed between July and September, 2017. GTT promised to ensure that there are as a few as possible Internet outages during working hours and early evening.

“The project for upgrading the network is expected to be completed by third quarter 2017. During this time some customers may experience intermittent outages. GTT deeply regrets any inconvenience you may experience and commits to making all efforts to minimize the outages during the business day and early evening,”

The phone company said the work is well underway to apply the latest generation of networking technologies and equipment to its broadband network, investments that are expected to provide faster speeds, more capacity and enhanced network reliability.

GDT, a leading systems integrator and tier 1 Cisco partner, will be working with GTT to upgrade systems and architecture to a level consistent with the best practices of leading global service providers around the world.

“These investments will not only provide for faster and better services today, but will also allow GT&T to easily manage aggressive traffic growth scenarios for many years to come,” said the landline, Internet and mobile phone service provider.

GDT described GTT as an award-winning technology integration partner with expertise in the delivery of enterprise network, collaboration, mobility and data center technologies to service providers, large enterprises, and businesses of all sizes.

GTT’s broadband network provides access to the Internet for more than 50,000 customers including residences, business, health care providers, schools and government agencies across the country.

“This system upgrade, coupled with GTT’s substantial undersea capacity, will facilitate a substantial improvement in broadband and data connectivity services through provision of faster speeds and more secure and reliable connections. These improvements will allow users of GTT services to experience all that the Internet offers today and the possibilities of the future,” GTT said.
