Millions for restoration of Botanical Gardens

The Budget for the National Resources Ministry was approved in the Committee of Supply on Tuesday with millions of dollars being allocated for the restoration of the Botanical Gardens.

The monies budgeted under Capital Projects of the Ministry of Natural Resources will be funneled through the National Parks Commission for the Botanical Gardens.

Among other things, the move to restore will include the construction of a ‘Black Caiman Walkway’, rehabilitation of fencing structure, improvements to drainage and irrigation structures and the rehabilitation of the plant nursery.

Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman under scrutiny from the Opposition revealed that the funds would go to the agency.

He said that the government’s aim was to “restore the Botanical Gardens to its original intent that is for botany.”

Aside from the Zoological Park and other attractions, the Botanical Gardens is home to one of the most extensive collections of tropical flora in the Caribbean and are laid out with ponds, canals, kissing bridges and a bandstand.

Many bird-watching groups also visit Georgetown's Botanical Gardens as an introduction to Guyana's vast bird life.
