NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — Human cases of West Nile virus have now been reported in four boroughs, according to recent data from the New York City Department of Health.
Of the five human cases, three contracted West Nile neuroinvasive disease, which can cause severe health complications, including encephalitis, meningitis, and acute flaccid paralysis.
The remaining two cases showed no evidence of central nervous system involvement.
There is one reported human case in Brooklyn, one in Manhattan, two in Queens, and one on Staten Island.
West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito and can cause fever, headaches, tiredness/weakness, body aches and joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash.
Symptoms can occur up to 14 days after a bite from an infected mosquito.
