Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders on Friday condemned the shooting of six Guyanese soldiers on the Cuyuni River earlier this month.
“Heads of Government condemned the attack on 17 February 2025, perpetrated by an armed group of men from Venezuela on members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) while they were carrying out their lawful business along the Guyana/Venezuela border,” they said in their official statement.
The communiqué was issued seven days after the regional leaders wrapped up their February 19-21 summit in Barbados.
The GDF soldiers were shot while on a resupply mission from their main base at Eteringbang to an outpost at Makapa.
While it is believed that the soldiers were attacked by the feared sindicato gang, the Venezuelan government has opted not to condemn the shooting . Instead, the Nicolás Maduro administration has opted to accuse the GDF of invading the Essequibo Region and shooting Venezuelans.
The Venezuelan government had even gone as far as saying that its Prosecutors Service was tasked with investigating the incident which occurred purportedly in what it calls Guayana Esequiba.
The soldiers were air-dashed to Guyana shortly after the incident, treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital and discharged.
