UPDATE: Fire at the University of Guyana under control

Last Updated on Tuesday, 24 November 2015, 23:10 by GxMedia

The building on fire

Fire fighters Tuesday night controlled a fire at an office building at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Guyana, preventing the blaze from engulfing the main building that houses classrooms.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said a laboratory was affected, causing a series of explosions.

Usually reliable sources said the blaze began at about 6:35 PM and it was only about 7:05 PM that the first fire tender arrived. A total of four fighters responded and firemen tackled the blaze from several directions.

The plastic gutters of the main faculty building melted.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences building is being rehabilitated as part of a US$10 million World Bank loan to improve the delivery of science and technology by the University of Guyana.

Electricity supply to the Turkeyen Campus was disconnected.
