BREAKING: Policeman dies; drugs found on assailant who committed suicide

Last Updated on Friday, 18 September 2015, 14:40 by GxMedia

The police constable, who was stabbed by a drug addict while arresting him, succumbed to multiple stab wounds hours after the incident Friday morning.

He has been identified as Constable Antonio Dawson who was attached to Impact Base.

The murder-suicide occured at Houston, East Bank Demerara near Gafoor’s Wharf.

‘A’ Division Police Commander Assistant Commissioner Clifton Hicken said the assailant, who committed suicide, had in his possession quantities of ecstasy, cocaine and marijuana.

The assailant stabbed himself several times and died at the Georgetown Public Hospital while receiving medical attention. He has not been identified.

Hicken told Demerara Waves Online News that police saw the man acting suspiciously and approached him.

The suspec then proceeded to empty his pockets and then whipped out a knife, stabbed Dawson (policeman) before turning the weapon on himself.

Police later said in a statement that:

At about 0945h. today Friday September 18, 2015, police ranks on a marine patrol in the Demerara River, acting on information received, went to the Houston Fishing Wharf, EBD, where they saw a man acting in a suspicious manner.

The ranks approached him and during an attempt to conduct a search, the man forcibly resisted and assaulted one of the police ranks.

He walked away and proceeded to an area in the vicinity of the Gafoors Complex where he was approached by ranks of a mobile police patrol that had responded to give assistance. During efforts to arrest him, the man pulled out a knife and stabbed Constable Antonio Dawson of Impact Base, Brickdam, to his neck, chest and abdomen. He has been admitted to hospital in a serious condition. Dawson later died.

The man then proceeded to stab himself about his body and also slit his throat. He was pronounced DOA at the GPHC.

Varying quantities of cocaine, marijuana and ecstasy were found in his pants pockets and the weapon (knife)  has been recovered by the police.

The body of the man who is of African descent, and is so far unidentified, is at the GPHC Mortuary.
