Prisoner beats robbery victim in courtroom

Last Updated on Friday, 20 June 2014, 18:55 by GxMedia

Deryck Halley

A robbery accused on Friday jumped out of the dock at the Georgetown Magistrates courtroom and beat the man he allegedly grabbed several valuables from almost one year ago.

The perpetrator has been identified as 19-year old Wesley Griffith of 283 Thomas Street, Mackenzie, Linden. He beat 50-year old Deryck Halley of 14 North Sophia, Greater Georgetown during an adjournment in the session that was being presided over by City Magistrate, Judy Latchman.

Halley said that during the incident, which occurred at about 11 AM, he was cuffed and kicked about his body by Griffith who was not shackled or handcuffed.

Griffith is also charged in connection with a GUY$5 million robbery committed on a family Amelia’s Ward Linden on January 31, 2014.

Eyewitnesses said police came to his rescue by pulling the prisoner away and ordering him to return to the dock.

The victim was expected to seek medical attention and report the incident to the Brickdam Police Station. However, Halley said he was unsure whether he would return to court to testify in light of the incident and the possibility of being killed by the man when he is freed.

Griffith is accused of violently robbing Halley of one Blackberry valued GUY$52,000, one Nokia cellular phone valued GUY$25,000, GUY$30,000 in cash, house keys and motorcycle keys with an overall value of GUY$ 277,000. He was remanded to prison until July 16, 2014.
