Pork knocker jailed for robbing female miner, relative

A pork-knocker, who attempted to ‘mine’ his way to riches by robbing a female gold miner and her relative in the city, was Wednesday jailed for six years.

City Magistrate, Ann Mc Lennan sentenced 18-year old Harish “Terry” Gokul to three years each on two counts of robberies he committed on Jean Melville and Carlotta Melville at Alberttown, Georgetown on December 4, 2012.

The magistrate considered the seriousness of the offence, use of a gun in committing the offences, Gokul’s age and he had no prior conviction.

Gokul, of Middle Road, La Penitence, robbed Jean, who is a gold miner, of two shoulder bags, 30 ounces of raw gold, two gold rings, one pair gold earrings, and two pounds of quicksilver among several other articles with a total value of GUY$9.714 million.

Gokul was also convicted of robbing Carlotta at gun-point of one shoulder bag, one Blackberry cellular phone, one Guyana Passport and US$100 with a total value of GUY$360,000.
