Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud has already asked the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) for assistance in deploying soldiers as part of a confidence building measure. ““As a result of expressions of intimidation by members of the electorate, coupled with few incidents in Georgetown, the Commissioner of Police has called on the Chief of Staff for the support of Guyana Defence Force troops in the conduct of Joint GDF/GPF Patrols,” police said in a statement.
Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Steve Surujbally has called on President Donald Ramotar and opposition coalition leader David Granger to publicly appeal to their supporters to go home instead of milling around polling stations.
“Peace and tranquility must prevail. This peace and tranquility cannot prevail if there is an environment of turbulence. I would like to ask the persons who are milling around polling stations to disperse and go home,” said Surujbally.
First preliminary results are not expected to trickle in before 11 PM Monday. Final results and a official declaration could be available by Wednesday, according to GECOM.
