Former Guyanese and international boxing champion, Andrew âSix Headâ Lewis died in a crash Monday on the East Bank Demerara Public Road, police confirmed.
A senior police officer said he was informed that Lewis was riding a bike when he veered into the path of a car.
Lewis, 44, was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The former World Boxing Association (WBA) World Welterweight Champion was recently the subject of a political tug-o-war between Guyanaâs incumbent Peopleâs Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) and A Partnership for National Unity+ Alliance For Change (APNU+ AFC)
The PPPC had initially claimed that Lewis had endorsed it, but he later denied that was so and switched to APNU+ AFC.
Meanwhile, the APNU+AFC Coalition expressed its deep sadness on the tragic passing of national boxer Andrew âSixHeadâ Lewis.
Lewis died following a motor vehicle accident this morning at Friendship on East Bank of Demerara.
âSixHeadâs untimely passing has shocked us all. We express deepest condolences to his family, relatives, friends and fans and commit to ensuring that his legacy as a world champion is suitably acknowledged and honoured. He was a friend of the Coalition and endorsed us for the upcoming elections,â Co-Chairman of the It Is Time Campaign Raphael Trotman said.
âHis tragic passing reminds us that road fatalities is a national crisis which requires urgent remedial action and it is part of the APNU+AFCâs manifesto to address this scourge,â Trotman added.
