A 13-year-old boy was on Wednesday morning shot to his buttocks during a failed armed robbery bid on an elderly man near a church on Brickdam, police said.

The incident allegedly occurred on Wednesday January 14, 2026 about 10:15hrs in front of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Brickdam, Georgetown.

Investigators said the 81-year-old pensioner of Robb Street, Georgetown was at the time accompanied by his 79-year-old brother of the same address when he was attacked by two persons who rode up on a bicycle.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that while the men were proceeding to conduct official business, one of two identifiable males, who was armed with a knife, allegedly rode up on a bicycle and attempted to snatch a haversack being carried by the elderly man.

The victim raised an alarm, which attracted the attention of members of the public who intervened,” police said.

During the incident, a 25-year-old licensed firearm holder who was in the vicinity discharged his firearm in the direction of the suspects, police said

The Guyana Police Force did not say whether the shooter is a policeman attached to a government minister.

Police said the boy of Albouystown, Georgetown was struck and fell to the ground, while the second suspect escaped in an unknown direction.

Emergency medical technicians were summoned and the injured suspect was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he is currently receiving medical attention for a gunshot wound to his gluteal (buttocks) area, police added.

CCTV cameras in the area were being reviewed. The firearm involved was secured and lodged pending investigation, police added.
