Policeman faces life imprisonment, flogging if convicted on firearm charge

Mr Daniel Henry

Last Updated on Thursday, 4 December 2025, 22:31 by Writer

Mr Daniel Henry

The Region One (Barima-Waini) policeman could be jailed for life and whipped or flogged if he is convicted on a charge of possession of a firearm with intent to injure.

The charge was read to Constable Daniel Henry on Thursday by Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh but the officer was not required to plead.

Bail was refused and the accused was remanded to prison pending another court appearance on January 14, 2026.

The policeman was charged just days after the main political opposition We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) posted a video with a caption showing a man brandishing and firing an AK-47 assault rifle while threatening someone in Port Kaituma.

Section 37 of the Firearm Offences Act Chapter 16:05 states that if found guilty of a felony and on conviction on indictment shall be liable to imprisonment for life and to whipping or flogging.

The offence states that someone commits an offence if he or she has in his possession any firearm or ammunition with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury to property, or to enable any other person by means to endanger life or cause serious injury to property whether or not any injury to person or property has been caused.
