Two West Coast Berbicians, who were caught during a high speed chase with anti-narcotics police earlier this week, were Friday refused bail and remanded to prison until next week Monday.

Farad Hamid of McRae Street, Rosignol and Mark Douglas of Number Three Village pleaded not guilty to the charge of being in possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry read the charge whose particulars are that the accused had in their possession 58.84 kilogrammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

Police Prosecutor Corporal Bharat Mangru told the court that on Tuesday, March 12, 2015 anti-narcotics police staked out an area in the vicinity of Subs and Salads, Sheriff Street, Subryanville.

Mangru alleged that on seeing the police, Hamid, who was driving vehicle bearing license number PJJ 8009, turned west on David Street, Kitty. After the police intercepted Hamid, they found a white ‘salt bag’ containing the marijuana and later 31 parcels of the same type of compressed narcotic

The prosecutor related that Hamid told the police that Douglas asked him to transport the marijuana and he was waiting on someone. He was later arrested and they were charged with the offence summarily.

The prosecutor opposed bail on the grounds that there was no special reason to grant the accused their pre-trial liberty.
