Workers at the Linden bauxite operations of the Chinese-owned BOSAI Minerals Group on Thursday agreed to end their less than one-day old strike to pave the way for conciliation in a pay dispute over increased wages and salaries, a union official said.
General Secretary of the National Association of Agricultural Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) Dawchan Nagasar told Demerara Waves Online News that the conciliation talks would begin on Monday.
He said the union signed terms of resumption with BOSAI at the Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning. “Tomorrow (Friday) workers are expected to turn out back to work and Monday we’ll start the conciliation meeting.”
The Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning said in a statement that Monday’s conciliation meeting “set out to bring all issues that led to the strike action to the forefront with the aim of coming to an amicable and fair resolution for all parties.”
Mr Nagasar said BOSAI was offering a 7 percent pay hike for 2025 and 2026 while the workers were demanding 8 percent and 8.5 percent for those years respectively, in addition to a number of benefits. The union represents 350 workers.
The NAACIE General Secretary said workers downed tools at 7 p.m. on Thursday. “Part was shut down last (Wednesday) night because the mines started the strike but today everything was shut down except for essential services,” he said.
The ministry says it remains dedicated to fostering a harmonious industrial relations climate and welcomes the constructive step taken by both parties to end the strike and pursue conciliation in good faith.
