Team Mohamed’s Facebook page deleted, as Opposition Leader’s phones remain in police possession- lawyer

Team Mohamed’s Facebook page of more than 500,000 followers has been deleted, even as Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed’s  mobile phones remain in police custody as part of a probe into his alleged operation of a drone near President Irfaan Ali’s private residence at Leonora, West Coast Demerara, his lawyer told police.

“As at 5:00 p.m. on today, September 4th, 2026, the Team Mohamed Facebook page, primarily accessed by the Leader of the Opposition through his mobile device in the custody of the Guyana Police Force, has been deleted and cannot be found on Facebook,” Attorney-at-Law Eusi Anderson told Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken.

Mr Anderson stopped short of blaming the Guyana Police Force for deleting the Facebook page which was primarily used by Mr Mohamed to push the political agenda of his We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) which was voted in as Guyana’s main opposition party in last September’s general and regional elections.

“The Leader of the Opposition is not responsible and neither did he log into any device to alter, impair or otherwise delete the said Facebook page. These strange activities mark profound breaches of my Client’s constitutional and other liberties, which cannot continue in an unabated manner,” the lawyer said.

Mr Anderson urged Mr Hicken to return Mr Mohamed’s properties including his two phones, child’s laptop, keys, driver’s licence and other properties. He said the continued detention of the devices puts at risk his confidential sources who have provided information about alleged corruption in his capacity as Opposition Leader.

“His cellular devices contain sensitive and confidential information. My Client has disclosed to me that his cellular devices also contain information on active reports of massive corruptions and fraud committed by public individuals including evidence of a documentary and video nature contained on the said devices. Should those evidence be removed tampered with or altered in your ranks’ custody the Leader of the Opposition capacity to discharge his functions of keeping the government to account would be severely compromise as there is no way to replace those pieces of whistleblower evidence and disclosure which were entrusted to the Leader of Opposition for safe keeping,” the lawyer said.

In recent months, Mr Mohamed has used his Team Mohamed’s Facebook page to level serious allegations of corruption against several government ministers and President Irfaan Ali, his former longtime friend. They have all denied the allegations.

Mr Mohamed and Dr Ali had enjoyed close relations up to June 2024 when the businessman and his father were sanctioned by the United States Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control for alleged evasion of more than US$50 million in taxes payable to the Guyana government on more than 10,000 kilogrammes of smuggled gold.

The Mohameds are currently fighting a United States extradition request to face trial for alleged money laundering, wire fraud and mail fraud. So far, they have lost several court cases to suspend or quash the extradition hearings.
