Mr Dikimbie Gittens

An assistant accountant of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) was Thursday charged with the theft of just over GY$5 million from that election management authority and he was remanded to prison, police said.

Dikimbie Gittens, 30, who resides at Onderneeming, Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, was charged with larceny by clerk or servant in violation of the Criminal Law Offences Act.

Magistrate Fabayo Azore read the charge to him but he was not required to plead, police said in a statement.

Bail was refused and he was remanded to prison until October 15 when he would return to court for a status report.

Mr Gittens is accused of stealing a little over $5 million from the GECOM Secretariat at Barrack and Fort streets, Kingston, Georgetown between September 15 and 16, 2025.

He was arrested on September 22.

Sources said the money was withdrawn to pay GECOM’s polling day workers. However, it was soon realised that money was missing and police were called in.

A total of 13 persons were detained by police and subsequently released on station bail.
