Land identified for Caribbean law school in Guyana

An eight-acre plot of land has been identified on the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen Campus, Greater Georgetown for the construction of the Caribbean Council of Legal Education’s (CLE) fourth law school, Attorney General Anil Nandlall said Thursday.

“It is an eight-acre plot of land that will house the edifice and other facilities in relation to the Caribbean’s newest addition to its current complement of law schools,” he said on his Facebook page.

Mr Nandlall said clearing of the land will commence in the next few days. He said the Guyana government hoped that the law school would be “up and running in the shortest possible time.”

Announcement that the CLE had granted approval for another law school to be established, this time in Guyana, was made by President Irfaan Ali in his inauguration address on September 17, 2025.

The Attorney General said himself, Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana Professor Paloma Mohamed, Law Department Lecturer Christopher Ram visited the intended construction site.

The CLE is responsible for the management and operations, including tuition fees, at its law schools in Trinidad, Jamaica and The Bahamas.

Law degree holders are required to obtain a Certificate of Legal Education before they can practice in courts in the English-speaking Caribbean.
