Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday said the 2025 retroactive salary increase for government employees would be paid before the September 1 general and regional elections.
He hoped that finance minister Dr Ashni Singh had already started putting arrangements in place for the payout.
The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) and government in December 2024 signed an agreement for an 8% salary increase for 2025. Public servants had already received a 10 percent pay hike for 2024, in keeping with the agreement.
The Guyana Teachers’ Union and the Ministry of Education last year signed a three-year agreement to provide for salary increases of 10% for 2024, 8% for 2025 and 9% for 2026 in addition to a series of other benefits.
