A Georgetown/Vreed-en-Hoop speedboat bowman on Wednesday stabbed to death a passenger during a scuffle over the fare at the Vreed-en-Hoop stelling, police said.

The identity of the dead man was not immediately known, police said. The incident occurred at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

The bowman was later arrested at the Georgetown Public Hospital where he had gone for treatment to injuries.

He told investigators that the now dead man attacked him with a knife which he took away and stabbed him.

“Subsequently, acting on further information received, the 22-year-old suspect was contacted at the Georgetown Public Hospital and injuries were seen on his left upper arm, upper left side and back. When questioned as to how he received the injuries, he claimed that the now-deceased man robbed him of the passenger fare (money) and that the now-deceased man attacked him with a knife and inflicted the injuries on him. He further claimed that he took away the knife and stabbed the man,” the Guyana Police Force said.

The bowman was arrested and taken into custody at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station.

The man was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital by public-spirited citizens. He died while receiving medical attention,

A 56-year-old security guard at the Vreed-en-Hoop boathouse told police that at about 6:10 p.m. he saw the now deceased man walking out of the stelling and sitting on a bench under a yellow stall in the area, bleeding from both sides of his upper body.

He further stated that with the assistance of two other persons, the injured man was placed into a car and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

The body of the deceased was photographed and examined by the police, and three wounds were seen on his upper body on both sides, police added.
