Brazil invites Guyana to G-20 Summit to talk about making money from forest preservation

Brazil's President Luis Inacio 'Lula' Da Silva and his Guyanese counterpart, Dr Irfaan Ali

President Irfaan Ali embraces Brazil’s President Luis Inacio ‘Lula’ Da Silva at the latter’s inauguration in 2023.

President Irfaan Ali late Sunday night congratulated Brazil’s President, Luis Inacio ‘Lula’ Da Silva on his re-election for a fourth historic term, pledging to continue working together in several areas including the creation of wealyj in Latin America and the Caribbean.

“I look forward to continuing our close collaboration to strengthen bilateral relations, deepen regional integration, expand trade and investment, and advance our shared commitment to sustainable development and regional prosperity,” Dr Ali, a major US ally in the Caribbean and South America,  said in a statement.

The BBC reported that da Silva, the veteran left-wing president, has been re-elected after a bitterly fought campaign, beating his right-wing rival Flávio Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro had promised to align Brazil more closely with Washington while Lula had warned the US not to interfere in the election and insisted that Brazil would “never fit into anyone’s backyard”.

The Guyanese leader said the Brazilian leader’s historic reelection would allow him and his party to build on the progress achieved over the previous term and to “pursue a future of greater opportunity for all Brazilians.”

Dr Ali said Guyana and Brazil enjoy strong and enduring bonds of friendship, mutual respect and cooperation. The President said the Brazilian election was an “important democratic milestone and extend my best wishes for continued peace, progress and prosperity.”

Al Jazeera reported that around 9:13pm Brasilia time (00:13 GMT), Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court called the race for Lula, who had earned 51 percent of the vote, with more than 96 percent of ballots counted. More than 51.49 million ballots were cast for the incumbent. Bolsonaro, meanwhile, netted 48.68 percent of the vote, or 48.8 million ballots.

Meanwhile, Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS) Albert Ramdin on Sunday night said the Western Hemispheric organisation commended “the Brazilian people for their increased voter participation in the second round of the elections, a testament to their commitment to civic duty, peaceful conduct, and democratic spirit and values. Following President Lula’s reelection, the OAS will continue working with the Government of Brazil on the forward looking and united hemispheric agenda for peace and prosperity. The OAS EOM (Election Observation Mission) in Brazil’s preliminary report on the runoff will outline opportunities to improve the country’s electoral processes.”
