Travel bans for persons involved in public terror

As calm was being gradually restored to several parts of the country, police issued bulletins for several persons who are wanted for inciting public terror and warned that they would be banned from leaving Guyana.

“These persons shall be placed on a no-flight list, and their personal information and other particulars will be shared with regional and international law enforcement agencies,” the police force said in a statement.

A top government official told Demerara Waves Online News at 5 a.m. that “so far” calm has been restored and “teams were cleaning up the various areas”.

Police also imposed a ban early Tuesday morning on the gathering of persons across Guyana until 5 a.m. At 1:34 a.m., Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn used the Public Order Act to ban all public meetings, gatherings and assemblies of persons, processions or marches in any public place from 12:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. “in the interest of good order and public safety in every administrative region.”

The unrest was sparked by discontent with the alleged suspicious death of 11-year-old Adriana Younge last Wednesday or Thursday in a pool at Double Day Hotel, Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.

Three foreign forensic pathologists said the girl died by drowning and there was no evidence that she was killed and her body disposed of in the pool. However, her father Subrian Younge rejected the findings.

The law enforcement agency said it was actively reviewing all video footages, images, and other available evidence, and all persons implicated in criminal conduct, including, arson, blocking and burning public roadways, malicious damage and destruction to private and public properties, personal violence, and acts of terror and domestic terrorism, shall be arrested and charged.

Police welcomed Leader of the Opposition and the People’s National Congress Reform/A Partnership for National Unity’s Aubrey Norton distancing himself from criminal acts “currently being perpetrated across the country.”

While the Force recognizes the importance of political leaders denouncing unlawful activities, it vowed to uphold the rule of law.

The force warned that any individual from any political party who engages in criminal behavior will be subject to the full extent of the law.
