Police probing gunshot at PNCR’s headquarters

Police on Monday began initial investigations into a shooting incident at the headquarters of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) one day earlier.

Head of the Criminal Investigations Department, Senior Superintendent Leslie James said police have been initial investigations.

No one has been arrested and the identity of the man has not yet been established.  Leader of the PNCR, David Granger and party Chairman, Basil Williams have said that the shooter was part of the Returning Officer’s security team.

Another senior police officer told Demerara Waves Online News that the police were acting on a report that was made by a woman at the Alberttown Police Station. The woman alleged that she was present when she observed a man discharge a round.

The sound of a single gunshot was heard at exactly 12:11 PM. Immediately,  delegates and observers at Congress were seen scampering for cover.

Granger and Williams said they learnt that a group of persons were pushing forward a barrier during preparations for voting when the round was discharged.

No one was injured.

Meanwhile, Region 10 Chairman Sharma Solomon called for a swift and thorough investigation rather than a cover-up.

“The gunman who recklessly discharged his firearm in Congress Place  must be held accountable for recklessly endangering the lives of all who were around and for the reckless use of his firearm, even if he is licensed firearm holder. Region 10 calls on Mr.  Granger and all party members to condemn this wanton disregard for the lives and safety of party comrades and immediate sanctions on this gun-toting menace, who must not be sheltered or protected by friends and contacts in high places.  

We call on the Guyana Police Force to become immediately involved in investigating the discharge and display of this firearm in public with the intent to hurt, maim, disfigure or threaten unarmed persons,” said Solomon.
