Guyanese police want to question boat captain about alleged piracy

Last Updated on Friday, 18 July 2014, 3:50 by GxMedia

In the wake of the discovery of the body of one the fishermen after what is believed to have been piracy, Guyanese police hope their Surinamese counterparts will deport the captain for him to be grilled by crime sleuths.

Head of the Criminal Investigations Department, Senior Superintendent Leslie James said his investigators would like to question boat captain, Feroze Hack. He is currently in Suriname ever since the incident on July 8 incident.

Questions are being raised about whether the alleged pirate attack occurred in waters off the neighbouring former Dutch colony or in Guyanese waters because the fishing boat was found at De Hoop, Mahaica and the body of one of the fishermen washed up on the Mahaicony foreshore on Thursday.

Hack-the lone survivor- has alleged that pirates attacked the vessel tied them up and stole their cargo and other valuables before setting them adrift in another boat. Relatives disputed claims by Hack that the incident occurred on the Corentyne River where they were blindfolded and thrown into that waterway.

The body of 41-year old Andrew “Butt” Gopie of Annandale, East Coast Demerara was found by families of the four fishermen who formed a search party.

Those missing are 19-year old Chanderpaul Jalim of Recht-Door-Zee, West Bank Demerara; Vinesh “Monkey Brain” Drunarine,24, of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara and 37-year old Raymond Gomes of Recht-Door-Zee.
