PPP eyes parliamentary majority in fresh elections

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 20:59 by GxMedia

PPP General Secretary, Clement Rohee addressing about 700 persons at Babu John on honour of late Presidents Cheddi and Janet Jagan.

Facing the prospect of early general elections,  the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) on Sunday assured Berbicians that steps were being taken to address their concerns in a bid to regain a parliamentary majority.

“We agreed that we need to correct some of our mistakes that we have made and we are bold enough, we are big enough, we are mature to correct whatever mistakes on the ground,” he said at a commemorative event at Babu John, Corentyne in honour of late Presidents Cheddi and Janet Jagan.

President Donald Ramotar was not present because he is off to the mid-term summit of Caricom leaders.

Rohee stressed that in correcting those mistakes “one single and over-arching objective” is to regain our majority in the parliament and to maintain our seats in the executive”.

The top PPP official said  Guyanese across all divides were growing increasingly impatient and some were calling for fresh elections.  He did not go into details about the prospects for early polls.

Rohee’s assurance came about one week after the Government Information Agency (GINA) published reports of persons in known PPP-Civic strongholds calling for street protests and early general elections in response to the opposition’s stance on amendments to the Anti Money Laundering and Countering of Financing Terrorism (AML/CFT) Act.

“Until such time as elections are called un this country, we will remain as solid as a rock,” he said.

He accused the opposition of provoking street protests against the legitimately and democraticlly elected government.

Rohee observed that AFC and APNU were  “romancing themselves passionately”, resulting in many returning to the PPP.

The AFC and APNU have joined forces in calling on government to approve their  amendments to the AML/CFT Bill as well as establish the Procurement Commission.
