US deportee allegedly gave friend cocaine to take overseas

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:00 by GxMedia

A United States (US) deportee who allegedly gave a woman cocaine-laden cream liqueur to take to America on Friday pleaded not guilty to drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Robin Wills of Republic Park, East Bank Demerara denied having 2.232 kilos of cocaine in his possession at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) November 17, 2013.

Wills was refused bail and remanded to prison until February 5 when he is scheduled to appear in the Providence Magistrates’ Court.

Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Oswald Massiah told the court that an unnamed woman arrived here on November 9 for her step-father’s funeral. She contacted Wills whom she knew before and he assisted her in renewing her passport.

After travelling with his friend and her sister to Berbice, they all returned to Georgetown where he arranged for them to stay at a guest house.

Massiah said the man successfully secured the assistance of the overseas-based sister to take two bottles of liqueur to the US. On their way to the airport, the Prosecutor said, Wills stopped at his Republic Park home where he collected the items and placed them in the woman’s suitcase between her clothing.

The CANU Prosecutor said the woman was arrested after checks by security at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport revealed that the bottles had contained cocaine.  On arrival at the CJIA, Wills stayed with the driver while the two sisters transported the suitcase and entered the check-in area, said Massiah.

The US-bound woman was arrested. However, Wills only surrendered after a wanted bulletin was issued. He was positively identified, questioned and charged with the offence.
