Policeman charged with robbing taxi service of hefty sum

Constable Colin Harris, who is based at the Wismar Police Station, and civilian Kelvin Pollard were remanded to prison until January 10 when they appeared on Wednesday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The prosecution’s case is that on December 7, while armed with a handgun, Harris allegedly robbed Green Ice Office Assistant, Rosita Kalchow of GUY$620,00 and US$50 property of Vibert Pooran.

Police alleged that Harris, while armed with a gun, snatched the money from Kalchow’s desk while Pollard was outside waiting on a motorcycle.

Immediately after the robbery, according to the prosecution, Green Ice taxis were alerted and two persons fitting the description were seen riding on Mandela Avenue.

Harris’ lawyer, Melvin Duke, said his client was a serving member of the Guyana Police Force and he was of good character.  The lawyer said that on the day in question, his motorcycle was taken away and he went to the station to report the matter when he was arrested.

The lawyer noted that while Harris was wearing a red helmet at the time, he was wearing a black helmet.

A senior police officer said earlier this week that the two suspects were knocked over and they fled. They later went to the police station to recover the bike when they were arrested.
