US embassy conducts medical outreach in Ituni-Kwakwani

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:00 by GxMedia

GEORGETOWN – The Humanitarian Assistance Program (HAP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Linden Care Foundation, conducted a Medical Outreach and humanitarian donation in Ituni and Kwakwani, Region 10, the American embassy said Thursday.

The participation of outstanding volunteers at both medical facilities — the Linden Care Foundation and the Georgetown East Medical team led by Dr. Errol Bassoo — ensured the success of the medical engagement.  Deputy Chief of Mission Bryan Hunt, who accompanied the HAP team during their medical outreach, visited with patients and pledged continued support from the U.S. Embassy.

During the two-day event, medical personnel were able to treat 80 residents from Ituni and 112 residents from Kwakwani.  The Medical Outreach provided care to the residents in the form of dentistry, HIV testing, counseling and general medicine.  Upon the conclusion of each Medical Outreach, the HAP team donated unused over-the-counter medication, antibiotics, and pain medication to both medical facilities.  The donations will enable the clinics to provide better medical treatment for these outlying communities during daily operations.  The HAP team also donated over 200 pairs of shoes, clothing, and cleaning supplies. The donations were made possible with the support of Food for the Poor based in Georgetown.  Kwakwani Head Doctor, Cerdel McWatt, expressed his gratitude to the U.S. Embassy and the Humanitarian Assistance Program for their efforts to bring much needed resources to the area.

The HAP team will continue working to bring Medical Outreach and other humanitarian projects to the people and communities of Guyana.  According to HAP Director Kevin Plewniak, this weekend’s medical outreach program is part of the U.S. Embassy’s ongoing commitment to work with the Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Health and facilitated by the HAP team, to provide medical assistance and other humanitarian needs to the people of Guyana.
