Acting Police Commissioner, Leroy Brumell looks set to be confirmed as the country’s top cop because Opposition Leader, David Granger has not opposed his nomination, Granger’s office said Thursday.“The Opposition Leader did not express any opposition to the confirmation of Mr. Brumell,” Granger’s office said in a brief statement. Constitutionally, the President is empowered to appoint a Police Commissioner after meaningful consultation with the Opposition Leader
The Opposition Leader’s office said Granger met with President Donald Ramotar earlier Thursday to discuss the Guyanese leader’s nomination of Brumell to be confirmed as Commissioner of Police.
Former Police Commissioner, Winston Felix, who is a legislator for A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), had previously voiced his opposition parliamentary coalition’s support for Brumell to be confirmed.
Brumell has been acting since April 2012 when Henry Greene resigned amid swirling accusations by woman that he had raped her at a city hotel.
Before dying in a serious vehicular accident in September 2012, Greene’s lawyers had successfully gotten the High Court to quash moves to prosecute him for rape.
