Bandits open fire at Tuschen in foiled robbery

Bandits Wednesday night opened fire at the home of a businesswoman before fleeing empty handed in the latest reported attack on the West Coast Demerara/ East Bank Essequibo area.

Sharmila Shaw, a stallholder at the Parika Market, and her son Shawn Ally Shaw confirmed that several men attempted to enter their home at Tuschen New Scheme, East Bank Essequibo around 9:30 PM.

He said three shots were fired at the back of the house when friends arrived on the scene in response to an alarm he raised on being notified of the men on his premises.

Shaw said police did not respond promptly and the community policing group no longer patrols the crime-prone community.

He recalled being at home when a neighbour called saying that three bandits were in the yard and several others were on the bridge. Shawn said surveillance cameras did not pick up the location of the men because they were hiding behind a bus and the mandir.

One of the bandits, he said, was already on the veranda when his friends arrived.He said a strange car arrived and picked up six others who were on the bridge.

The attempted armed robbery, he said, occurred four days after they were traced by men in a vehicle.

Shawn said he applied for a gun permit two weeks ago. He said he was unaware of last Sunday’s outreach by the Police Commissioner and top officers following the brazen robbery-murder of Vicky Namdar on September 10 in his shop adjoining his home at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara.
