China, Guyana ink another grant agreement

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:01 by GxMedia

Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh and China’s Ambassador to Guyana Zhang Limin signing the grant agreement.
The Government on Thursday signed off a US$8.16M aid agreement with the Chinese which will be used overtime to undertake several projects.

While no light was shed on the projects on which the grant will be expended, Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh noted at the signing ceremony at the ministry’s boardroom that  the financing will be utilised in the months and years ahead . He said when one re-examines projects undertaken by the Chinese , there is no doubt that the grant resources made available by the Chinese will contribute significantly to the objectives of Guyana’s economic and social development.

He said that over the years relations between the two nations have grown from strength to strength and the many projects which have been completed with China’s support stand testimony to the relations between the two countries.

He said that such relations have been further strengthened as evident by high level visits to the Caribbean by the Chinese government.

Singh said that Guyana is open to investors from anywhere once they comply with local laws.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Limin speaking through an interpreter stated that China will continue to support the government in the area of bilateral trade relations . He said June’s visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the Caribbean highlighted the Asian county’s support and developmental agenda where assisting Caricom is concerned.

He said that during the visit the Chinese leader proposed economic assistance to Caricom and he noted too that a meeting between President Donald Ramotar and the Chinese leader was successful. He said last year, in excess of US$200M was provided to Guyana and this can best be attributed to the more larger projects which are being undertaken here with China’s assistance.

He reiterated that the governments of both countries have had good relations and this will be further strengthened in the years ahead.
