The mother, who was on trial for cocaine in her teenage son’s suitcase handles, has been fine $2.7M and sentenced to three years imprisonment.

Cora Towler appeared late Wednesday afternoon before Magistrate Leron Daly, where she changed her initial not guilty plea to guilty. The woman changed her plea after almost all the evidence had been tendered against her in court.
On September 13, 2016, the 14-year-old, in whose suitcase handles the narcotics were found, had testified against his mother. Under the guidance of Police Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru, the teen in his statement had said that the defendant had admitted to knowing fully what was in the luggage.
Towler was on trial alongside Ian Griffith for possessing of 1.004 kilogrammes of cocaine for trafficking purposes.

The discovery of the drugs was made on August 26, 2016 when the teen, who was awaiting his flight from Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) to New York, was apprehended by ranks of the Police Narcotics Branch.

Demerara Waves Online News understands that Fowler vomited in the courtroom before her sentence was handed down to her.

It is unclear why the accused changed her plea to guilty, but she was ordered to pay a fine of GYD$2, 710, 800.

Meanwhile, the case against Griffith in the same matter remains pending.
