Mini-bus driver jailed, fined three times value of marijuana

Last Updated on Wednesday, 5 October 2016, 21:52 by Written By Denis Chabrol

Seon Brammer, who was before the court on a drug trafficking charge, was Wednesday found guilty and sentenced to 48 months in prison.

The 34-year-old father of two was charged with having 464 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. During his trial he was out on bail.

According to police, they had found a quantity of marijuana under a cushion and under a plyboard, during a raid they had conducted on Brammer and his mother’s residence in Diamond Housing Scheme.

Before handing down her sentence, Magistrate Judy Latchman considered all the mitigating factors against the accused as well as the manner in which the drugs were concealed. She also took into consideration the quantity of drugs in question.

During the continuation of his trial in August, Brammer’s lawyer Adrian Thompson had argued that a policeman attached to the Narcotics Branch had misled his client in order to obtain a confession from him.

However, Police Prosecutor, Kerry Bostwick had refuted this by telling the court that after the drug was unearthed, police ranks put the allegation of trafficking narcotics to Brammer, to which he had replied in the affirmative. The prosecutor had also stated that police ranks had put the same allegation to Brammer after they found more marijuana under a bed.

To this he had replied, “I done tell you the weed is me own. Meh mother aint know about it.” After considering all the factors placed before the court on the matter, the magistrate ordered Brammer to pay a GYD$30,000 fine and serve his two years in prison.
