PPP MPs, former PM interrogated by SOCU

PPP Chief Whip Gail Teixeira

Last Updated on Wednesday, 13 January 2016, 12:00 by Writer

Three Parliamentarians of the People's Progressive Party (PPP) and Former Prime Minister Samuel Hinds have been interviewed by the Guyana Police Force in connection with a recent audit report on NICIL.

The parliamentarians include PPP Chief Whip Gail Teixeira, Nigel Dharamlall and Irfaan Ali.

While only the three have been interrogated thus far, others are expected to appear before investigators of the Special and Organised Crimes Unit (SOCU).

Teixiera on Wednesday told reporters at a press conference that the officers came to her home and requested an audience with her.

"Knowing that some of the other people had appointments, I said okay can I come in today or tomorrow and they said today so I went in," the Chief Whip detailed.

She stated that she went to SOCU in the company of her attorney Bibi Shaddick.

Asked what she was questioned about, Teixeira said she could not"talk about those right now" but noted that the questions were centered around the audit report submitted by Anand Goolsarran.

"They said its the first phase of looking at the statements and issued raised in Mr Goolsarran's report that relate to criminal activity," said Teixeira.

Goolsarran has said that his report has found numerous damning pieces of evidence that shows how NICIL, the government’s holding company for state assets, was being run.

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon had also announced that government had called in the police to conduct a criminal investigation into the matter.
