Liana Cane furniture factory, widely regarded as a shining example of social entrepreneurship, was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning.
Millions of dollars in equipment have been destroyed and at least 50 persons who were employed directly by the company are now jobless.
Sources said the blaze started at about 3: 30 AM at Victoria Road, Plaisance.
The Head of Liana Canes, Joycelyn Dow, could not be contacted immediately.
The decades-old company had captured niche markets overseas and locally including seating accommodate Estee Lauder’s eco friendly retailer Aveda and has been featured in outlets worldwide.
The company used vines instead of lumber to make good quality durable furniture.
