A mason was on Monday remanded to prison after appearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One for robbing a student of a GUY$149,000 cellular phone.

The charge against Deon Charles is that on April 5, on  Thomas Lands, he robbed Queens College student, Saudia Ramjoon student of a Samsung Galaxy cellular phone. The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge, which was read by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

According to the facts presented by the prosecution, on the day in question, the Virtual Complainant was sitting in the YMCA compound with her friends, when the defendant approached and grabbed her phone.

Ramjoon gave chase after the defendant escaped on a bicycle. The report continued that the student managed to catch up with the defendant who dismounted and dealt her a cuff to the face. Police in the area were alerted and the defendant subsequently accosted him with the phone in his crotch.

The young man, who was unrepresented at the time of appearance told the magistrate, “Meh worship is nothing of the sort,” and went on  to state that he and the girl’s boyfriend had “a lil stand down” and the she attempted to part them, when she received the cuff.

When asked whether he was charged for any previous offense, the defendant answered in the affirmative, stating that he’d been charged for discharging a loaded firearm.

The prosecution objected to bail based on the seriousness of the matter, and Charles was remanded until April 15 for statements.
