Jagdeo dismisses Nagamootoo’s talk of national unity govt

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo on Tuesday poured cold water on Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo’s announcement that he has been appointed to lead the administration to enter ‘government of national unity’ talks with the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

Jagdeo accused Nagamootoo of politicking at the Whim Cricket Ground last Saturday, September 5, 2015 when he addressed a community meeting. “I don’t think Nagamootoo can make that offer. I think it was politically done given the bad reception he had in Whim,” he said.

The meeting was attended by an estimated 500 persons at Nagamootoo’s home village.

In a dismissive manner, the former Guyanese leader said he was not convinced by the Prime Minister’s announcement. “I would prefer to hear things from the President and from his office because frankly speaking I will treat them in a more credible manner than responding to the public utterances of Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo.

I think he is prone to make those utterances without any real substance to them and I don’t think in this government he is authorized to make any offer to anyone because he can’t even secure commitments that were made to him (in the Cummingsburg Accord between the Alliance For Change and A Partnership for National Unity),  said Jagdeo.

The Prime Minister stressed on Saturday that the PPPC could not be left out of the political governance of the country because that party controls seven of the 10 administrative regions, having received a “fair chunk” of votes at the May 11, 2015 general and regional elections.

The APNU+AFC coalition campaigned on, among other platforms, the creation of a government of national unity.

National Unity was one of the agenda items at a recent meeting between President David Granger and Opposition Leader Jagdeo.
