Mercy Hospital celebrates 81 years

Last Updated on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, 16:59 by Denis Chabrol

To mark this milestone, there was a Mass (Church Service) at the hospital serenity gardens on 1st September, at noon.

St. Joseph Mercy Hospital (SJMH), one of Guyana’s premier Catholic healthcare institutions, proudly announces its 81st Anniversary, marking more than eight decades of medical excellence, compassionate nursing, and community-cantered care, the hospital said Tuesday.

Founded in September 1945 by the Sisters of Mercy, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital has grown from a humble infirmary into a modern multi-specialty hospital equipped with advanced diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic capabilities. Throughout its 81-year history, the hospital has remained steadfast in its core philosophy: providing competent healthcare to all individuals without distinction of race, colour, or creed.

“It has been blessing and privilege to serve Mercy Hospital for over 3 decades. We, at Mercy, not only care for the patient needs but we ensure that we accompany them even after they are discharged.” Terry Mohamed, Communicate Coordinator said in a statement issued by that healthcare institution located on Parade Street, Kingston, Georgetown.

Congregants at a Mass (Church Service) at the hospital’s Serenity Gardens on 1st September, at noon.

“This anniversary is a tribute to the unwavering dedication of our medical staff, nurses, support teams, and the Sisters of Mercy, whose vision continues to guide us. As healthcare in Guyana evolves, we remain focused on advancing our facilities, embracing modern technology, and—above all—preserving the patient-first care that has defined our institution for over eight decades”, expressed Mr Jerri Dias, Chief Operation Officer of the hospital.

Key Highlights of 81 Years of Service:

  • Legacy of Care: Continuous delivery of comprehensive healthcare services including Emergency Care, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Surgery, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and Rehabilitation.
  • Community Outreach: Dedicated assistance to underserved populations, continuing the Mercy mission of standing with the vulnerable and promoting public health initiatives across Guyana.
  • Modern Expansion: Ongoing modernization of diagnostic equipment, laboratory capabilities, and patient care facilities to meet the growing demands of Guyana’s expanding population.
