Fire destroys multi-storey Alberttown building, DHL/Guywillship not burnt

A fire of unknown origin destroyed a multi-storey wooden and concrete building on Fifth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, leaving at least 40 persons homeless.

An official of DHL/Guywillship told reporters that, aside from smoke, up to 7:55 p.m. there were no indications that the building, located three doors west of the burnt building, that houses the shipping agencies was affected.

Speaking to reporters through an interpreter, residents said most of the 40 occupants were nationals of Cuba, the Dominincan Republic and Guyana.

They said they lost their passports, other documents and money in the blaze that started just before 7 p.m.

The building was once the home of Tutorial High School up to the early 2000s before it was relocated to Woolford Avenue.

One of the displaced residents said he heard a loud explosion then the building was quickly engulfed in flames.

He said a disabled woman in a wheelchair was rescued from the burning building but the whereabouts of a child were not yet known.

Firefighters contained the inferno to the building.

A building immediately west of the former school was burnt slightly.
